“There is this play called Othello and in it Desdemona is murdered by Othello, her lover. And there’s a moment when Emilia is brushing her hair… Emilia is sort of like a maid servant… and she’s trying to speak some wisdom into Desdemona and they’re having a conversation about men… men cheating and how men are.

And she says, ‘What is it they do when they change us for others? Is it sport? I think it is. Is it frailty that thus errs? It is so too. And have we not desires for sport? Have we not frailty as men have? Then let them use us well or else let them know the ills we do, their ills instruct us so.’

And so written by Shakespeare, I think that it’s the evolution of things… that my today of grappling with building out of joy, is probably moreso than my mother, who didn’t really do much at all out of joy. And hopefully the generation after me will have more joy than I.”
